The forest

The forest was important for the economic system of the Casentino Valley providing to habitants woods and firewoods, flowers, fruits.
Parco Nazionale delle Foreste Casentinesi, di Falterona e Campigna, is a national park instituted to preserve this marvellous environment.
The park is the ideal place for activities such as walking, trekking, mountain bike, hourse trekking. Within the park you may also visit Lama, a natural suggestive reserve.

Agriturismo Poppiena is nearest to another rare spectacle in nature.
Monte Falterona is one the highest mountains around the Casentino Valley and, altought Monte Falco is higher, Monte Falterona is more famous because it is the source of Arno river.
Arno is the longer river of the tuscanian ones and its course is partially described in Dante's Comedia. In the slope of Monte Falterona there is also a lake called "Idol lake". In the Etruscan Age it was a pagan cult site, today it is one of the archeological sites of the valley.
