Casentino valley is rich of history, art, culture and religion. Many parish churches dated back to Romanic age . They were built along to ancient medieval street: Flaminia Maior (it crossed the valley from Arezzo, along the Arno river) and Flaminia Minor (which started from Poppi to Florence passing by Strada in Casentino, other little villages, Montemignaio and Consuma).
San Pietro in Romena, closed to the castle, and Santa Maria Assunta in Stia, in village main square Piazza Tanucci, are two extraordinary example of beautiful buildings of Casentino Valley. The capital reproduce figure of saints, sirens, mosters of medieval bestiaries with animals and common naturalistic elements (maybe taken from valley landscape). The external decoration of Romena church, altought ruined from the severity of the weather, should be very beautiful.
The style and architectural settings of parish church of Montemignaio seem to other churches of the valley. This church was probably built up by the same workers. Ther internal part is very suggestive for the presence of pillars and columns at the same time. Moveover you can find big round arches, separating the spans, and rests of some frescos on the pillars.
In the historical center of Poppi, one of the most beautiful villages of Italy, you can visit the Madonna del Morbo church with its exagonal plan, and the gothic San Fedele church with its portal decorated with capitals representing fitomorphic elements and, in the inner, a set of big round arches with green and white bricks.
In the historical center of Bibbiena, the church was dedicated to Saints Ippolito and Cassiano, after the distruction of the ancient church set in a place called "Il Castellare" out of Bibbiena. In the inner you can find frescos of XIV century, many artistic forniture such as Arcangelo di Cola da Camerino's Madonna col Bambino (XIV century).
Many parish churches was built over ancient pagan places. Behind the Sant'Antonino church in Socana a sacifical altar was discovered confirmating there was certainly an important Etruscan site. It's one of the biggest altars in Europe.
